Radon is the second largest contributor to lung cancer behind cigarette smoking. Per TN.gov Radon is responsible for 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year. About 2,900 of these deaths occur among people who have never smoked.
Radon is a naturally occurring chemical element that is an odorless, colorless, tasteless, radioactive noble gas. It is the byproduct of the break down of Radium. Radium stems from breakdown of thorium and uranium. This is known as a decay chain.
Radon enters homes from various places. Mostly from underneath the soil through cracks and openings of the foundation and plumbing.
Initial testing should be done using closed house conditions for 48 hours + 12 hours prior to start of test.
